 Rainy Day!
Nydja talks about what she like to do on a rainy day.
Hi, this is Nydja and I'm from the United States. I'd like to tell you about six things that I enjoy doing on a rainy day.One of the things I enjoy doing on a rainy day is reading. I like to read books on a rainy day because when it's gloomy outside, a good book can brighten my mood. One of my favorite books to read on a rainy day would be Jane Eyre.
One of the other things, I enjoy doing on a rainy day is going over to my friend's house or having them come over to my house, and we just go outside and sit on the porch. We talk about what's been going on in our lives and maybe have some hot tea or cocoa to warm us up.
Some of the other things that we do on a rainy day is we go out to the movies and sometimes we spend the entire day out there. We'll find two or three movies we really want to see, maybe long movies and just spend the who day at the theater.
Sometimes, when it's raining you don't want to go outside, so I tend to stay in and redecorate my house. Move all the furniture around. Rehang pictures that I haven't had up in awhile. Just change what's going on inside since I can't change the rain.
Sometimes because it's not too bad on the roads, I like to go for long drives on backroads that aren't too busy and just see the rain outside and to take in all the scenery.
The last thing that I enjoy doing on a rainy day would have to be baking a warm meal, maybe a cake or a roast. Something that would really warm up the house get rid of all the cold.

Hi. My name is Mike. I'm from Canada and the question is how often do you ride your bike? Well, I recently bought a new bike about three months ago and sadly enough I don't often ride my bike because I'm really busy with work. So I've only had a handful of times, maybe four or five times, where I've had a chance to ride my bike but the bike I bought is a road bike and it goes really fast on the road so I'm looking forward to riding more in the future.

HOW DID YOU MEET YOUR WIFE?
PRE INTERMEDIATES AND INTERMEDIATES

http://www.elllo.org/english/0551/597-Michael-Marriage.html

Todd: Hey, Michael, I just met your wife. She's a really nice woman. Really friendly.
Mike: Yeah. yeah. We met a long time ago. We've been married a lot of years, now.
Todd: How did you meet actually?
Mike: Oh, gosh, we back when we were both students, at Arizona State University in Tempe Arizona, and I had volunteered to be one of the tour guides for new students, foreign students who just coming in for that school year, and it was the end of August, and it was very steamy, a very hot day, and I remember I met the students, there were maybe four or five of them at the Student Union for this walking orientation tour of the campus. It's a beautiful campus, by the way, and so, you know, I remember she was sitting on this bench and I went and, you know, she smiled at me and I smiled at her, and there was some kind of spark.
Todd: Yeah, yeah, like a connection.
Mike: There was a connection. There was a connection there, and I, you know, we went on this walking tour of the campus and when we were you done, you know, I kind of reluctantly, sort of said goodbye to her and the rest of the group, and you know, kind of said, see you around, and I think the next day even, she went found out who I was and where I worked and she dropped in my office.
Todd: Wow, that's pretty cool. That's pretty romantic.
Mike: It was very cool. Very romantic. You know the funny thing is, that particular bench, where we met, on our anniversary, 20th anniversary, we went back to the campus (no way) where we met and we took a picture of ourselves on the same bench because this is where we first met.
Todd: What a great story.
Mike: It was very cool to go back there.
Todd: So, in terms of your personality, how are you guys similar?
Mike: How are we similar? Oh, man, I think we're more different than anything. I think our biggest similarity is that we're both so different, in other words that we're both very tolerant (yeah) of people who are different and so we, you know we kind of get along. We have an understanding that's we're going to misunderstand each other most of the time.
Todd: Right, right.
Mike: But we sort of approach that with a kind of humor and flexibility so I think that's what makes our relationship work is that we got that kind of agreement.
Todd: So you think that's the key to any successful marriage?
Mike: Is not getting so upset at misunderstanding each other or kind of using misunderstanding as a way of getting to know each other. I think that is one of the keys.
Todd: That's nice. Thanks.
Mike: Sure.

HAVE YOU  RAISED AN ANIMAL

http://www.elllo.org/video/1101/V1108-Camp.htm

Hello, my name is Aiko, I'm from Japan and my question is have you raised an animal and my answer is yes. I have raised quite a few animals actually. I had a bird and hamster and dogs but my strongest memories with my pets are from my very young days. I merely kept insects and amphibians because when I was a child I suffered from asthma and I wasn't allowed to have any furry animals for quite a long time. I enjoyed observing the insects' habit. For example, whilst I kept quite a few crickets, one cricket loved watermelon. He didn't eat anything but watermelon and another one loved cabbage.
I was also into what I called categorization. I collected wood lice and then I separated females from males and another example is I collected tadpoles and I put the tadpoles with tails together. I really enjoyed my days with my small animals but my Mum certainly did not. One day I decorated my shoulders with caterpillars. They were really big, fat and colorful and beautiful but my Mum found this very gross and it made her scream.

PRE INTERMEDIATE AND INTERMEDIATES

http://www.elllo.org/video/1151/V1165DanialMedia.htm
Hey, my name is Daniel and I'm from Chile and the question is should children be allowed to use social media? Well, there's a whole dilemma and there's a whole debate about it and I get the point. I know it's very risky because you don't really know who is on the other side and, you know, it might seem, like to children it might seem like there's a very friendly person but at the end it might be something kind of tricky. So if you take that point, I mean kids shouldn't be allowed to use social media. But on the other hand, I think it's better if they do because it's not, the problem is not about social media itself. I think it's because the problem is about how parents raise their children and what values they teach to them so I think if children are raised properly with like strong values, there's no problem towards social media. I think social media is as risky or as good as any other thing that we have now so I should focus a bit more on how parents raise children.

The first thing I'm going to talk about is my family using social media and, you know, I usually talk to my brother on Facebook or, you know, we'll post or tweet to each other just little things we're doing during the day. It's kind of more casual than email so it's kind of more relaxed. You don't feel the pressure of having to write in complete sentences and watching your grammar and I don't know what it is about the format that let's you sort of be a little more intimate with people than you would in say a formal, in a letter or email format. So, yeah, my family and I do use social media a lot like Facebook. My mother doesn't use it so much. I think older people are maybe more reluctant to share stuff on the internet but as for my brother and I, yeah, we always, we always use social media and we really like it. Thanks very much.

MIXER - INTERMEDIATE AND UPPER INTERMEDIATE - TALENT

http://www.elllo.org/english/Mixer126/T126-Talent.htm

Lindsay / United States
I wish that I was a ballet dancer. I think that would be really awesome to be able to stand on my tiptoes and be a beautiful ballerina dancer, like a swan.

Matt / United States
If I could choose one talent over anything else, I think that would be to be able to write nicely. My handwriting is so poor that even I have trouble reading it. So, if I could magically get a new talent, that would be to have nice handwriting.

Shiloh / United States
I wish that I could play soccer. A lot of my friends enjoy playing soccer. When you travel to other parts of the world, people love soccer, and I'm always left out because I don't know what's going on and I'm no good. So, I feel that if I was able to play soccer, I would have an in with new friends and be able to meet some interesting new people.

Paul / England
I wish I was able to play the guitar to a high standard. I have recently bought a guitar; however, I'm yet able to play. It's something I feel that is also kind of a social thing, where you can play a music, which people will always respond to and enjoy.

Tim / United States
I wish that I could sing. I can't sing very well, I feel, but there are a lot of people who think I would have a good singing voice. But since I'm not very confident with singing and never really try, I don't know how to get better. So, I wish I was just better at itautomatically.

Warren / Canada
I really wish I could speak some other languages. I studied French when I was a kid, and I actually have forgotten most of it now, so I would like to go back and learn that again. But I'd also be interested in learning some other languages as well.

THE BEST TIME TO GET MARRIED

INTERMEDIATE
http://www.elllo.org/english/Mixer076/T091-Marry.htm

Amir / Iran
If marrying early means the age of thirty, I don't think so because my parents got married after thirties and they're having a happy life and for male, especially maybe there are not necessarily obliged to marry early because their circumstances are different from the women because they have to give birth, maybe it's better for them to get early ... before they're 30 ... if they want to give birth, I mean. Yeah. Thank you.
Lori / Canada
I don't think early or late really comes into the question. I think you should get married when you have found the right person and you're really sure that this is someone you want to spend the rest of your life with.
Eoin / England
I think it's probably better to marry later in life, though possibly that's influenced by the fact that both of my parents married at a later stage in life. The reason I think that is because it allows you to really discover who you are and to do a lot of the things that you would want to do while you're young.
Aki / Japan
I'm 27 right now I don't consider if I marry now, I don't consider marrying early so, I guess marrying late is better. You get more experience and ideas. What marriage is. You get to maybe find the perfect guy for yourself so I'd rather marry late.
Chris / England
I think you should marry when you're older, but I don't think that means that marrying when you're younger is necessarily a bad thing. I just think, when you're older you understand more about yourself. The person you marry ... you know ... you should be able to imagine that this is the person you're going to live with for the rest of your life, and when you're young, maybe you don't know what that the rest of your life is going to be, so when you're a little bit older you can perhaps see that and you know, find someone who's the best match for you.
Maiko / Japan
I used to believe that marrying young is better than marrying later in life, but now that I married later, I think it was a good decision to do whatever you want to do when you are young and you have experienced things you couldn't have done if you were married so I'm really happy to be married a little later in my life.

ELLLO TOURISM

Hello, I'm Hristo from Bulgaria, and the question is: "Is tourism big in your country?". Tourism is a pretty big business in my country. Bulgaria is in Eastern Europe and many Western Europeans come for their vacations, either on the seaside or in the mountains. Many people in Bulgaria have their income out of tourists. Bulgaria has many, many tourist spots and it's very cheaper, it's cheaper relatively to, compared to Western Europe, so many people visit Bulgaria

PRE INTERMEDIATE AND INTERMEDIATE

http://www.elllo.org/english/Mixer076/T098-Shopping.htm

Tom. U.K.
I don't like shopping very much. I'm not into all this walking around department stores looking at stuff, choosing things. I'm a tall guy and so it's really hard for me to find clothes that fit so shopping is really not pleasant.
Santi, Indonesia
Well, I really, really enjoy shopping. That's why ... a week I could spend about four time to go to the department store, especially when there is a bargain or sales, and since my house is near one of the biggest department store, it's about five minutes by car, so, well, if we want to have lunch together we go to that department store, and after that we go shopping.
Lia, Indonesia
I go shopping quite a lot. Recently, maybe three to four times a week, but what I buy is usually daily needs such as fruit or food but not clothes or things like that.
George, U.S.
How often do you go shopping? Well, recently I don't really go shopping at all. Maybe only once a year. I remember in high school though I used to go shopping probably once a week. I used to be one of those spoiled little rich kids that would get that would get anything they wanted, but again moving out on my own, I've discovered a hundred dollars for a t-shirt is not a good deal, and yeah, I think I'm a little bit of a better person for it.
Jess, U.K.
I go shopping maybe about two times a week. I really enjoy shopping, and where I live there are lots and lots of clothes shops open after I finish work, so often when I leave work on my way home I find myself wondering into shops and picking things up and trying things on. I love shopping.
Mike, Singapore
How often do I go shopping? I like to do my shopping on a weekday because I don't like crowded places, and so I do my shopping usually on Mondays or Tuesdays, but for buying groceries, I like to do my shopping on Fridays

Hey, my name is Daniel. I'm from Chile and I'm going to talk about what I did yesterday. It was a really, really busy day. I started going to school. I spent a lot of time there, then I have to do some homework so I spent a couple of hours doing that. Then I had to cook my dinner. That was really, really quick. I didn't really, really feel like cooking too much so yeah, and then some friends invited me to a party. It was a huge, huge party. We had a lot of fun but some of my friends were really tired and they decided to go back. But instead of going back at the end, we ended up going to play pool so that was really cool. We finished around, I don't know, like five or six. It was a really, really cool night. I hope I can do it again.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1E-Hleh3UCE
He is a hustler
He's .........................................
He is a loser, he's a bum, bum, bum, bum
He lies, he bluffs
He's unreliable.
He is a sucker with a gun, gun, gun, gun

I know you told me
I............................................
I know you said
He's just a dog astray.
He is a bad boy with a tainted heart
And even I know this a'int smart

[Chorus]

But mama .................................................
And this type of love
Isn't rational, ..............................................
Mama please don't cry
I will be alright
All reasons inside
I ..............................................
Love the guy

He is a villain of the devil's law
He is a killer just for fun, fun, fun, fun
That man's a snitch and unpredictable,
He's got no conscious
He got none, none, none, none

All I know, should let go, but no
'cause he's a bad boy with a tainted heart
And even I know this ain't smart

[Chorus]

But mama im in love with a criminal
And this type of love
Isn't rational, ...................................
Mama please don't cry
I will be alright
All reasons inside
I .......................................
Love the guy

[Bridge]

And he's got my name
Tatooed on his arm
His lucky charm,
So I guess its okay
He's with me

And I hear people talk
Trying to make remarks
Keep us apart
But I don't even hear
..................................................

[Chorus]

'Cause mama im in love with a criminal
And this type of love
Isn't rational, it's physical
Mama.............................................
I will be alright
All reasons inside
I just cant deny
Love the guy

So if I get the chance I really would like to visit Mexico.

Tom, U.K.
I was in a typhoon in Hong Kong, and I just arrived with a big heavy backpack, and I had to hide in a telephone box while the street flooded and the water came up around me.
Jess, U.K.
Natural disaster? No, I haven't been been in a natural disaster. Unfortunately I was very close to a bomb which went off
in Manchester when I was about sixteen years old, which was quite scary, but probably not as scary as a tsunami or a typhoon or something.
George, U.S.
Oh, yes, yes. I have been in a natural disaster. I forget what year but Hurricane Yuniki in Hawaii, but I lived on Ohau so we got the eye of the hurricane
so it wasn't like harsh at all. In fact, I remember when it hit, I remember telling my parents, I wanted to go out and fly a kite because it looked so nice outside, so it wasn't really that bad of an experience for me.
Pernais, Jamaica
Yes, I have. I've been in a fire. A really big one actually. It was just very scary. There was just smoke everywhere, and I couldn't see anything. My eyes were hurting. I was choking
, and I really thought I was going to die, but I was rescued by an old man passing by.
Mike, Singapore
OK, have I been in a natural disaster? Well, I've actually seen one happen while I was driving, and this was along I think the coast. I think it's called the Pacific Ocean Highway, if I'm not wrong. Anyway, there was in December 2004 I think, it was ... there was a big landslide during a the raining season in Los Angeles, and while I was driving I actually saw it, and then I didn't know what was damaged, but it was all over the news
, and then it was bad.
Doron, U.K.
Yeah, actually, I was staying with friends in Norway and we were camping and we got hit by a blizzard and it was really frightening, but luckily I was with some big Viking Norwegian guys, and they knew exactly what to do, because I didn't. It was really ... you couldn't see anything. It was so white and the snow was so heavy and it actually hurt quite a lot, and it didn't help that
 it was absolutely freezing.

ELLLO - TAKING TESTS
PRE INTERMEDIATE - INTERMEDIATE -

http://www.elllo.org/video/1151/V1159FelipeTests.htm

The question is are you good at taking tests? Well I think I'm not that really good at taking tests but, you know, there are many, it depends on the type of test. There are some tests where you have to, you know, memorize and then you have to write down all that you have in your head. All those kind of tests seems quite difficult for me. I don't really like them too much but then there are another type of test in which you have to, let's say, to think, to use your head and then to analyze a lot of, let's say, things and then write down your own ideas or even write your own opinions. Those types of test are, seem easier for me so I enjoy, even enjoy them more than those where you have to, you know, memorize them like a computer, you know, and then remember everything at the time of the exam and write down everything. I don't like that. But pretty much I don't like exams, you know, because I feel stressed. It's stressful and I feel nervous sometimes, you know, because you have to time up a year also. I don't like exams.

Edwin, Australia
Am I a good dance? No, I am a terrible dancer. If you talk about break-dancing, I would actually break something, if I went to a club, I'd stay at the bar more. Although, friends have tried to teach me a bit of moves, or some moves, I am still just very terrible at it.
Jess, United Kingdom
Yes, I am a good dancer. I love dancing. I love music. That's a big stress release for me, to go out and dance the night away, and I love getting dressed up in dancing clothes and high heels and sparkles and glitter.
David, Kenya
Am I a good dancer? Yeah, I think I am, depending on the person I am dancing with, yeah, I think I'm a good dancer and I love dancing. I've loved dancing since I was a kid, and I still do. I don't think I am going to stop anytime soon.
Chrystal, United States
I consider myself as an Okay dancer, I guess. I've been working out these days and I think my favorite way to work out is to close all the curtains and just blast outmy favorite songs and just dance in my room, but I won't let anybody see it except for my cat.
George, United States
A good dancer? Well, that depends. Are you talking about real dancing or Dance Dance Revolution the video game, because I am a monster at Dance Dance Revolution. Real dancing not so much though.
Hana, Australia
I'm not a very good dancer. I'm very uncordinated, so whenever I try to dance, I know what I want to do in my mind, but as soon as I try and do it with my hands, it just looks completely different.
