My least favorite season is winter because winter is like really cold and I hate when it's cold cause you have to wear a lot of clothes on you. You can't do anything. You practically can't move around in this clothes and I hate skiing. I hate snowboarding. I hate all winter sports, so there's nothing fun about winter for me

I don't use public transportation too often. When I still lived in my home town, it was just too small to have public transportation. Nowadays, I like to ride my car. I think public transportation is a great idea, but I really like the convenience of having my own vehicle.

Dani / England
All the time, especially here at the moment at the university, I always use the bus or the train or walk everywhere. I can't drive, so it's my only option really.

Shiloh / United States 
At school, I use public transportation a lot to get from my home to my university. There's a regular bus service that runs between my house and my school, which is about five kilometers or so. But when I'm at home with my family in New Mexico, I don't use public transportation at all. I think that American public transportation is few and far between. it's not very well-funded, and it's not very good, unless you live in the city. Everybody has cars, so you don't really have a need for public transportation, because everybody is able to drive himself where they need to go.

Sarah / England 
Public transport is something that I don't often use at all. Because I own a car, I normally just jump into the car and just drive wherever I need to go. The only time really that I go use public transport is when I'm traveling around London, because using the underground is a lot more easier than trying to drive through the busy roads.

Warren / Canada 
Not so much these days. I have a car now, and where I'm living, the bus system isn't very good and there's no train station right by me, so I tend to drive.

Tim / United States 
I don't use public transportation very often. It's not as common in America as it is in other countries. And I also own a car, so if I need to get anywhere, I just drive my own car, which is very convenient, because I can go wherever I want at whatever time I want without being dependent on a bus schedule or something like that.

Warren: Hey, how's it going?

Lindsay: Good. I thought today we could talk about childhood dreams. When you were ten years old, what did you want to be when you grew up?

Warren: Right. Well actually it's a little embarrassing. I wanted to be a truck driver. I thought it would be really neat because you can just travel around everywhere and see different places all the time and you're always on the move. But you know I didn't become a truck driver.

Lindsay: No, you didn't become a truck driver. Why is that? When did your dream change?

Warren: Well probably when I was around fifteen I thought it would be a lot cooler to be a rock star.

Lindsay: Rock star?

Warren: Yeah, a rock star. I really liked electric guitar at the time and a lot of friends were into music as well so I didn't actually start a band but I played with a lot of different people and sometimes I would play with some bands but I never really stuck to it. But I did keep playing guitar and I ended up getting pretty good.

Lindsay: What kind of rock star did you want to be? Did you want to be like a heavy metal rock star or a grunge rock star?

Warren: I guess versatile would be the word. I liked playing a lot of heavy stuff and maybe some folk music as well, so kind ofeclectic.

Lindsay: So maybe a hippie rock star?

Warren: Yeah, maybe a hippie.

Lindsay: So then when you were twenty, did you still want to be a rock star?

Warren: No I didn't but I still played guitar then. I actually wanted to be a classical guitarist by then.

Lindsay: OK. What is classical guitar?

Warren: Well it's funny you say that because it's not just classical music. Classical guitar is, for one thing it's the type of guitar. It has nylon strings, not the steel strings like you see on a folk guitar.

Lindsay: OK.

Warren: And there's different styles you can play on it like Spanish music, or flamenco, or South American music, some classical music like Beethoven and things like that, or baroque music like Bach.

Lindsay: Does it have a singer with it?

Warren: Sometimes there are singers. Usually it's solo but you can play some chamber music with other instruments as well and yes I played some pieces with vocalists but it wouldn't be pop music.

Lindsay: And so now you're older, did your dream come true? Did you become a classical guitarist?

Warren: I did but I actually decided to change my dream after I become a classical guitarist.

Lindsay: So what's your dream now?

Warren: Well my dream now is to become a university professor.

Lindsay: Oh, and are you making steps to achieve that dream?

Warren: I am actually. I'm working at a university now, not as a professor, as a part time lecturer but I'm taking some courses and studying hard and hoping that my future will allow me to become a professor.

Lindsay: OK, well unless you change your dream again, I bet you'll achieve your dream so good luck.

SO, HE TRIED TO TIE A KNOT AROUND THE KNOB OF A DOOR AND AROUND THE TOOTH . BY THE TIME THE DOOR OPENED ALL THE TEETH WERE PULLE DOWN AND TOOTHY DIED,

I've always dreamed of going to Angor Wat, so I want to see that place before it's been overrun with too many tourists. Chris / England Well, I always said that I wanted to try parachute jumping, and I had the chance when I was in high school to do that but my dad stopped me going in the end because he said ... well, I'm quite a big guy - quite heavy ... and so, he was like, "Well, if you want to do it, then you really should lose a bit of weight because, you know, you're gonna fall and you're gonna shatter your legs" so he was very supportive of my dream, so in the future I think I'd like to try that, but maybe I should lose some weight. Aki / Japan I want to go to Antartica and maybe go on a dog sleigh. I don't like the cold weather, but I want to experience that sleigh and actually I want to go on the dog sleigh for my honeymoon and experience Antartica with my husband. Amir / Iran I would like to do skydiving, yeah. Skydiving, because I have acrophobia. This would be the biggest adventure I could can take. Just falling from the airplane for a few minutes. You know, now silence there. It would be strengthening me from inside, doing this adventure. Helen / Canada Well, I would really like to go cycling somewhere like Nepal or something like that, where there's lots of rugged mountains and beautiful scenery. I don't think I'm in shape enough to do it just now but maybe some time in the future, when I have more time to work out and stuff. INTERMEDIATE 

The following are letters to the editor of a school newspaper.

Students should be allowed to study without worrying about grades. Fortunately, most educators are becoming aware of the fact that students have different interests and abilities. However, the regimentation resulting from grades still exists. Grades often stifle creativity. Competing for better grades causes many students to turn down opportunities to pursue music, dramatics and sports. Grades impose an arbitrary standard of success on everyone. I do not demand as some extremists do, that grades be abolished immediately. However, I do believe that less emphasis should be placed on grades. I hope that someday grades will become optional at Village High School.

Drama Club

Let's face the facts about grades. Grades perform three basic functions. First, grades motivate students to work at their highest level of competence. Second, they act as a reward for hardworking students and as a reprimand to students who do not work hard. Finally, grades are used as an effective standard by which to measure student achievement. Good grades help students to get jobs and to get into university. I've spoken with a number of students who have jobs, and most of them say that they were hired primarily on the basis of their grades. My grades helped me land a part-time job and will help me get into university next year. I think grades are extremely important at Village High School.
