Hi!
How are you?
I am Bel, I was Au Pair of the Craig's and I am helping them to choose a girl.
I am from Brazil too. I live in Sao Paulo.
I loved being there for a year. They are a great family and Carson (the little boy) is really cute, he is adorable. I was part of the family, they took care of me like their daughter. They want somebody to be a big sister for Carson and part of their family.
They live in a small city in Ohio. I think they told you about that already. haha
He loves to play and have fun.
I am going to tell you a little bit of his routine.
He wakes up around 7:00/7:30 have breakfast, make his bed, watch a little bit of cartoon, change clothes and start a fun day. Playing outside if the wheatear is good or inside if it is raining. He loves to swim, do arts and crafts, read books, play with balls, ride his bikes, goes for a walk and he also LOVES to run. When the weather is not good he likes to go to the library, to grandma’s house… He loves to be occupied and it is really easy to have fun with him.
He goes to school two times a week.

Hello!

We are very excited to participate in the Au Pair in America program. We would like to introduce our family and tell you a little bit about our lives.

Members of our Family


Susan (mother): Sue grew up in New York State and later moved to Massachusetts with her family. She went to college in Boston, which included a year studying abroad in Switzerland. Traveling, languages, and cultural exchange are great passions of hers. In fact, she worked for AIFS in the Camp America program for many years. In 2002, she decided to stop working to become a stay at home mom. Sue’s hobbies are swimming, cooking, sailing and ball-room dancing (that’s how she met Noel!)


Noel (father): Noel is originally from Ireland, and has lived in the US for 20 years. All his family is still in Ireland, and we visit them every year. Noel has a technology and business background, and after working in both of these areas, he decided to start his own firm. He has an office in our town, about 1 mile from our home. Noel’s favorite hobby is sailing. He is part of a racing crew, and also enjoys sailing our boat on the nearby Hudson River. His other interests include running and ball-room dancing.

Ella: Ella is 9 years old, and will be in 4th grade when school starts again in September. She is on a competitive swim team and practices 3 or 4 times a week. Her other hobbies include Irish Step Dancing, singing, and piano. She also likes to ride her bike and play with her friends.






Corinne: Corinne is a confident, lively 6 year-old. She will be in 1st grade in the fall. She loves to swim, ride her bike, play on the playground, color and paint.

Jameson: ‘Jem’ is almost 4 years old, and a happy, energetic little boy. He goes to preschool four mornings a week. He loves to be outside, play on the playground, ride his bike, and keep up with his sisters.



Things we like to do


Family life and spending time together is very important to us, so much so that Noel made the decision to leave his job in New York City and start up his own firm. Since his office is right in our town, he is able to take the kids to or from school, and can spend time with them after work.






We enjoy being active and doing outdoor activities such as cycling, sailing, swimming and hiking. During the summer, we spend much of our time at the pool or on our sailboat. The kids love to swim, so it is very important that you are a strong swimmer and would feel comfortable taking the kids to the pool and playing in the water with them.


What is important to us


We want our children to be curious and excited about life and enjoy learning new things. It is important to us that they learn values like honesty, compassion, generosity and tolerance of other peoples and cultures. At the same time, we want to teach them to be independent, to think for themselves and to work hard to become the best that they can be in whatever area they choose.


We are not fanatical about fitness and health, but we do like to be active, and it is important to us that you enjoy sports and outdoor activities. We do not smoke, and do not want you to. We enjoy cooking and trying different types of food, and would love to have you show us how to cook traditional dishes from your country.

Given Sue’s and Noel’s experience living in foreign countries, and the girls’ frequent trips to Ireland, we have more exposure to cultural exchanges than most families. To have the best experience possible, we feel it is important for you to participate fully in our family life and activities. We would like you to feel you are a member of our family, and be comfortable having meals with us, going on trips, sailing, etc. We would expect you to act as you would in your own home, and pitch in with family chores such as dishes and general tidying up. We would ask you to treat our home with respect. At the same time, we would respect your privacy and encourage you to see and do as much as you can during your free time.

A Typical School Day


Noel and Sue leave at 8am and walk Ella and Corinne to school on their way to the office for work. You would start work at 7:30am and help get kids ready for school. You would drive Jem to preschool at 9am. You would be off duty till 12 noon, when you would bring Jem home, give him lunch, and play with him for a few hours. At 2:55, Sue picks up Ella and Corinne at school and brings them home. Alternatively, you might pick up the girls at school. After school, the kids may have swim practice or a play date. You might take them to the playground or park. You would finish at 6:00pm. Certain days, you might start at 11:30am, help with driving the children to after school activities, and finish at 7:30pm. We try to eat together with the kids, but when this is not possible, we give them dinner earlier, at 5 or 6pm, and then we eat later ourselves. You would be welcome to eat dinner with the kids or with us.

A Typical Weekend


We like to go out for walks, bike ride or bring the kids to the playground. The kids may have sports or birthday parties to go to. We often have a ‘movie night’ Friday or Saturday, when we watch a DVD and have popcorn. Or, we may invite friends over. On Sunday, everyone sits down together to a traditional Sunday dinner in the early evening. You could expect to be on duty for about 5 hours total on some weekends.

Why we would like an Au Pair


We are interested in Au Pair in America for several reasons. An au pair allows Sue to work part-time at the office, and have time to cook, shop, etc. We also think having an au pair is a great opportunity for our children to get to know someone from another country and learn about her culture. Finally, we look forward to sharing our language, customs and traditions with an au pair participant.

Free time opportunities


Since we work for ourselves, we can be somewhat flexible in terms of your schedule and time off. We will try to accommodate your requests whenever possible.

Pleasantville is a small town with a population of 7000, located in Westchester County, New York. It is 31 miles north of New York City. Pleasantville is an ideal town in many ways: Everyone walks a lot, and it is easy to meet people. You can walk to the library, a fine arts movie theatre, restaurants, cafes and shops as well as the village pool (in the summer). There are parks, tennis courts and a biking trail in Pleasantville. You can walk to the train station to catch the train to New York City, which is only 50 minutes away. Shopping malls and department stores are about 15 minutes away by car, in White Plains or Mt. Kisco. Pace University has a branch in Pleasantville, about a 5 minute drive from our house. Westchester Community College is also very close, about a 10-minute drive. You would have access to a car for your classes and social events. We would also give you access to a bicycle if you’d like to use it to get around town.

What to Say When Someone Dies

A few weeks ago, a friend emailed in and asked me to write about offering condolences. She recently lost her baby girl after 3 days of life and the silence of her friends and acquaintances about the situation has been disquieting for her. Please allow me to take a few moments to discuss the manners surrounding how to interact with someone who has lost someone they loved.

Be Prepared to Say Something

The most important thing to know is that there is no type of loss that shouldn't be acknowledged. Whether the person you know has lost a close family member, a friend, or even a pet, your condolences may be the one bright spot in that person's day. Please do not assume that someone else will step in and relieve you from the difficult job of offering your condolences. Yes, it is difficult to think about bringing up a subject that you feel will cause your friend more pain. However, avoiding the subject altogether and acting like life should just go on is a disservice to the memory of the one who has died.

Most of the time the person who has lost his or her loved one really wants to remember; they want to remember the good times and the unique traits the deceased had that made them special. In a way, it is a sort of memorial every time they are remembered.

I once was in my grandfather's kitchen while he called someone whose husband had recently passed away. My grandfather did have many years of experience making those kinds of comforting phone calls, but the simplicity and ease with which he discussed the man's passing was inspiring. He expressed his deepest sympathy and moved quickly to what a kind and thoughtful man his friend had been. He then asked how the woman's last few moments with her husband had been. Finally, he concluded the brief call with a memory of the deceased and an offer of assistance should he be needed.
