PRE INTERMEDIATE AND INTERMEDIATE

TAKING TEST

http://www.elllo.org/english/Mixer126/T140-Tests.htm

Rese / Botswana
I think.. all people learn, because they give you the opportunity to evaluate how much you know and how far you've gone with whatever it is that you're learning, and they give you a chance to also see how close you are with your peers in the class.

Lindsay / United States
I think tests help people learn, because they hold you accountable for information. Otherwise, even with myself, if I know I'm not being tested on it, I might write it down, but I'm not going to absolutely spend the time to sit and learn it, so they hold you accountalbe. That's why people are--

Sunny / Korea
Yeah, definitely, I think tests help you to learn, because they can review the things and then organize the knowledge in a systematic way, too, when they prepare for tests, and they can adopt many learning technologies when they prepare for tests.

Paul / England
I think tests are good in a sense that students are able to kind of organize their study. I think overreliance on tests is a bad thing, whereby the test result dominates the student concerns. The focus should be, I think, more about learning rather than test-taking.

Katia / Mexico
I do not think that tests help people learn. I actually believe it's quite the opposite: tests would stress some people and it tends to make the students memorize rather than learn. So, I really don't believe that tests help students learn.

Tim / United States
I think some tests are good because they motivate people to learn. But I think a lot of people have the tendency to study for a test very hard, to do well on a test and not really appreciate what they're learning, because they're only concerned about just getting a good grade on the test.

PRE INTERMEDIATE - TAKING TESTS

http://elllo.org/video/M126/T140-Tests.htm

Hello, my name is Aiko, I'm from Japan and my question is are you good at taking tests?
I suppose I'm good at taking tests because I work efficiently and I don't spend much time with it but I think that is the problem I have in my life because if you want to be a master of something you shouldn't study efficiently. You should be fanatic about it and then you should put one hundred and twenty per cent effort into it and that is something I haven't done so after taking tests and passing them, I don't have much left with me except just qualification.

WHAT WORRIES YOU

http://elllo.org/video/M126/T139-Worry.htm

What do I worry about? Well, I worry about a lot of things as most people probably do, but you know they say, worrying does nothing for you. It only adds stress to you. Some of the things I worry about are my future. I'm 23 years old and I live temporarily in Japan, and I don't know what I'm going to do after Japan, so I worry about the future and what I'm going to do. I also worry about what kind of job I'm going to be getting in the future, whether it can be as good of a pay as I have now. I worry about what I can accomplish in the future, whether I'm going to be able to get my Master's degree, whether I'm going to be able to do the things I live, which is travel, so those are just some of the things I worry about.

PRE INTERMEDIATE AND INTERMEDIATE - EXOTIC ANIMALS

http://elllo.org/english/Mixer126/T138-Pets.htm

Mak / Croatia
No, I would like to have, you know, pets, like dogs ... well, yeah, dogs. No, not cats. Dogs, because they're just I think friendlier, and I'm used to them since I have two dogs, and they call them German Schnauzers.

Sarah / England
I don't know if you count it as exotic, but I've always wanted a chameleon. I love the way that they walk. They're quite a funny pet and they seem to have a of character as an animal, so I would love to have a chameleon.

Paul / England
If I was to have an exotic pet, I would choose a nightingale, so in the evenings, this bird would sing its tune. I think it would be very nice to have such a bird, but I would be very reluctant to keep the bird in a cage, so perhaps I would just allow it to come and go as it pleased.

Kat / Germany
I don't think I'd like to have an exotic pet. When I think about exotic pets, I think of spiders and snakes and iguanas, and I don't really like any of those. They scare me, so I don't think I want an exotic pet.

Warren / Canada
I don't think I would like to have an exotic pet. I love animals and I'm definitely fascinated in animals from around the world, but I don't think it would be fair for me to have one as a pet. For one, I don't know how to take care of it properly. And I think they should be in the wild, and if it's exotic, that means this is not the natural environment for them.

Adria / United States
That's kind of a difficult question also because I feel like maybe it's not proper to have a pet that you've pulled from the wild. But I really do like birds, and I would probably have a bird. I don't know if you consider a parakeet an exotic pet, but I have had two parakeets when I was a child.

SKYFALL ADELLE

This ..........................
Hold your breath and count to ten
Feel the earth move and then
Hear my heart burst again

For this is the end
I've drowned and dreamt .......................
So overdue I owe them
Swept away, .................................

Let the skyfall
When it crumbles
We ........................................
Face it all together

Let the skyfall
When it crumbles
We will stand tall
Face it ......................................
At skyfall
At skyfall

Skyfall is where .............................
A thousand miles and poles apart
Where worlds collide and .................................
You may have my number, you can take my name
But you'll never have my heart

Let the skyfall (let the sky fall)
When it crumbles (when it crumbles)
We will stand tall (we will stand tall)
..........................................

Let the skyfall (let the sky fall)
When it crumbles (when it crumbles)
We will stand tall (we will stand tall)
Face it all together
At skyfall

[x2:]
(Let the sky fall
When it crumbles
We will stand tall)

Where you go I go
What you see I see
I know I'd never be me
Without the security
Of your loving arms
Keeping me from harm
Put your hand ..................................
And we'll stand

Let the skyfall (let the sky fall)

PRE INTERMEDIATE AND INTERMEDIATE

SPOILED CHILDREN

http://www.elllo.org/english/Mixer126/T137-Spoiled.htm

Tony / Mozambique
I would say, maybe children are spoiled, because I remember when I was younger, like we had to work hard if we wanted to get something from our parents. Or even the stories you hear from your parents, they're basically used to say the same thing, "If you want to get something, you need to work hard for it." But nowadays, maybe some children don't work hard but they still get certain things although they didn't work hard.

Katia / Mexico
I think children right now are more deprived than spoiled. Unfortunately, I believe that many parents are trying to protect their children a little bit too much, so they're deprived of many things, like creativity or spontaneity or curiosity. So, definitely, I think children are deprived.

Paul / England
I think children are deprived due to the reduction of clean and safe play environments. When I speak to my parents or grandparents, they tell me about, you know, times when they used to play in the river or play in the forest; whereas now, it's very- children are quite restricted. There's a lot of concern about people who are going to do bad things to their children, and I think it's very restrictive. So, in a sense, I feel that children are deprived these days.

Kat / Germany
I know a popular opinion is that children nowadays are spoiled, but I don't really think so. I think that there are a lot of things that children had maybe fifty or a hundred years ago that they don't have anymore. Nowadays, so many people are divorced, and their children are just living with one parent. That is a good example for how children nowadays can be very deprived.

Gareth / England
I think kids these days are deprived of nature. I think most children grow up in big cities, and I think there's thisurban sprawl that's happening, where cities are becoming bigger and encroaching on the natural countryside. So, I believe that children are deprived from nature, from climbing trees and playing in ponds and rivers, and stuff like that.

Tim / United States
In America, I think children are very spoiled. A lot of themhave things handed to them; they don't have to work very hard. So, for sixteenth birthday, parents will give their kids a car, or their kids won't have to work very hard to pay for school or college or anything like that. So, they don't have anything to challenge themselves, because their parents give them everything.

Chris: Hello, my name is Chris. I'm from the United States.
Phoebe: Hello, my name is Phoebe and I'm from China.
Chris: Our question is were we spoiled as children? I think I was probably a little spoiled. My grandmother got me things I wanted like Nintendo games and things like that, other kinds of video games but I don't think I was overly spoiled. I didn't get whatever I wanted, but I was an only child so I didn't have to share many things so in that sense maybe I was a little bit spoiled. How about you?
Phoebe: I think, I'm the only child in my family and my parents they have not really spoiled me. I think when I was young they asked me to do my things by myself, finish the things by myself and if I want something I have to behave myself and I have to, you know, try to be good and then get my reward. So I don't think I'm a spoiled child when I was young.
Chris: Not too spoiled?
Phoebe: Yes.
Chris: OK.
