Barbara couldn't take it any more. Her upstairs neighbor was blasting his stereo again. She had asked him twice already to turn the volume down. The first time she asked, he was surprised. He said he didn't know that she could hear his stereo.

"Yes," she said, "it's just like your stereo was in my living room. I can hear every note!"

He said he would keep it down. She hoped that he was telling the truth. Of course, he wasn't. The very next day, he blasted his stereo. She marched upstairs to remind him of his promise. He said the volume was so low that he could barely hear it. She asked him to turn it lower. He said he would try. Barbara could swear that when she reentered her apartment, the music was louder than when she had walked upstairs.

So, this was the third time. She took her baseball bat upstairs with her. She knocked very loudly on his door. When he opened the door, she screamed at him like a crazy person. She told him she would kill him if he didn't turn the music down and keep it down. His eyes got big.

She went back downstairs. She couldn't hear a note.

I can't believe I said that, she told herself.

Marni: You know, Ella, that old expression “silence is golden”?

Ella: Sometimes, maybe, but I don’t mind a little background noise.

Marni: All that noise helps you relax? That’s fascinating. Yeah, I’m totally the opposite. I really, I think it sounds like aracket, so much background noise. Just shut up, you know?

Ella: As soon as I get home I turn my laptop on, I have my stereo going, I throw on the TV. That just helps me relax.

Marni: So you probably don’t really like going camping or getting out into the woods where it’s just quiet and still.

Ella: Yeah, I usually bring a stereo if I go camping.

Marni: Wow. Remind me to never go camping with you.

Discussion

Marni loves silence. She is a teacher, so she has to talk all day and is always around noisy children. When she gets home, she just wants a little peace and quiet.

Ella, on the other hand, doesn’t like silence. If it is too quiet, she can’t relax. Sometimes silence even creeps her out. At home, she always turns on her stereo or TV for background noise.

It’s hard for Marni to understand how Ella can stand all that noise. Ella even likes to bring a stereo with her when she goes camping. Marni says she could never go camping with Ella. She loves the peace and quiet of remote places.

Zero Conditional

Ella says that she usually brings a stereo if she goescamping. This is an example of the zero conditional.

You can use the zero conditional to talk about things thatusually occur under certain conditions. In this example, Ella usually brings a stereo under the condition that she goes camping.

We form the zero conditional with two clauses, one with if + simple present verb and the other with another simple present verb. These clauses can go in either order.

We had a very traditional wedding and it was extremely expensive, but it was worth it. Carol and I only paid half. Her parents paid for everything else. We got married in church. Carol wore a white dress and she looked fantastic. I wore a suit and I think I looked quite good too! We had a big reception. We had 200 guests. The reception was in a wonderful hotel. We took lots of pictures. It was just great!

Before I got married, I worked for a large company. I was a secretary. Now I'm a housewife. I don't like it when people say, "Oh, so you don't work" or "You're really lucky. I'd like to stay at home all day". They don't understand I'm very busy all day. I get up before my husband to fix breakfast for him and the children. Then I take my son Henrique to school. I have another son, Miguel, who is four, so I look after him during the day. I do the laundry, I do the shopping, I do the cleaning, I do the cooking. It's a very difficult job.
